About Us

Desert Cry is the evangelistic ministry of John and Hannah Alarid. The focus of this ministry is to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ to everyone who will listen, but more specifically, to the darkest pockets of society where most would not care to go: the gang member, the prostitute, the marginalized of the inner-cities of the world, the child thief who steals to feed his hunger, the junkie who shoots dope to fill his soul, and the prisoner who breaks the law yet cannot break his cycle of crime. It is to these that Desert Cry carries a message from our Savior–a message of redemption and restoration,

John Alarid is an evangelist and church planter. He is the lead pastor of CityReach Church and executive director of Hope Homes of the Ozarks located in Springfield, Missouri area. He also serves as the South Central Missouri Area Manager for Prison Fellowship Ministries reaching out to prisoners and their families with the gospel of Jesus Christ. Hope Homes are a Christ-centered discipleship home for those struggling with life-controlling issues or desperate situations; such as, addiction, post-incarceration, victims of sex trafficking and homelessness. Along with planting CityReach-Springfield, John has planted churches in the Philippines and assisted in planting a Spanish Church in the Springfield, Missouri area. He has many years experience facilitating Christ-Centered recovery homes and training centers from Los Angeles and Phoenix to Manila, Philippines.

John is passionate about working with the marginalized of society. This passion stems from his own ten year battle with an intravenous heroin addiction, involvement with street gangs and drug trafficking. After hitting rock bottom several times, he finally surrendered his life to Christ on a cement floor in a lonely prison cell at the New Mexico Department of Corrections. After God encountered John in prison, he was unanimously voted in as the inmate pastor. During this time in prison the Lord spoke to John about an army He was raising up, in these last days, from the most unlikely candidates.

God not only gave John eternal life but also set him free from addiction and restored his mind. This man who was once incoherent, graduated with a BA, Summa Cum Laude from Central Bible College  in 2013. In May of 2016 he graduated with a Master of Arts in Intercultural Studies from the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary in Springfield, MO. Truly, if any man be in Christ, he is a new creation.

Hannah Alarid is an artist, musician, song-writer, and worship pastor at CityReach Springfield. Hannah graduated from the Christ-centered rehabilitation program of Teen Challenge when she was eighteen years old. She recently graduated with a music degree from Evangel University and serves as the Creative Arts Pastor at CityReach Springfield.

John and his lovely wife Hannah live in Springfield, Missouri where they are pioneered Hope Homes and CityReach Church in north Springfield, MO. John speaks regularly at local jails and prisons. They minister together at churches and conferences.

  1. John, we are praying for you as you labor so faithfully for the Master. May God richly bless both you and your wonderful wife. My wife joins me in wishing you both a great Thanksgiving celebration and a wonderful Christmas season next month. The doctor will not permit me to travel over sees any more. I am only 86 years old, and he thinks by physical conditions should keep me home. He was wanting me to quit traveling even before my serious heart surgery 3 years ago, but following my surgery I was still able to make a few trips. God has been good to us and we thank Him for the joy of serving Him for 51 years as field missionaries for 51 years, most of those living in the Latin American countries with 1 term in the Canary Islands, Spain. It has been a wonderful experience for us through all these years, but our doctor worried about my health and finally convinced me I should not travel anywhere because of the heart surgery 3 years ago. I had a very bad experience following the surgery with my left leg in the areas they took the vein to bypass my heart in several locations. The month in the hospital didn’t look tot promising and the doctors told my wife and our 2 daughters who are missionaries stationed in Uruguay that I may die from the experience, but so many were praying for me, and God heard their prayers and answered them on my behalf.

God richly bless you and your precious wife as you minister wherever He leads.

    Sam & Mona Balius.
